Join Studio and Plein Air painter Mark Mehaffey for a fun day exploring the Split Primary Palette for plein air painting.
The morning will be spent in class using a warm and a cool of red, yellow and blue plus white to mix all the neutrals, browns and secondary colors needed to both say what must be said AND simplify your color mixing. The afternoon will be spent outdoors for a gently guided plein air afternoon within walking distance from the Old Art Building. All indoor painting should be done with acrylic, watercolor or gouache.
SUPPLY LIST
Participants should plan to bring the following supplies:
- Sketchbook
- Pencil
- Two Painting Panels (8x10 or 9x12 - Mark uses pre-toned gessoed hardboard)
- Complete plein-air painting set-up (easel, palette, etc). Weather permitting, the afternoon will be spent painting outside within walking distance of the OAB. In case of inclement weather please bring ONE landscape photo that we can use as a reference. *If you are unable to print a photo, please send the digital image to info@oldartbuilding prior to class and we will print it for you
- Oil painters - please plan accordingly and bring your own set-up

Meet Mark
Internationally recognized artist Mark E Mehaffey is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society; Dolphin Fellow, the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor USA Honor Society, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America; Signature Life Member - Master Status and Distinguished Master, Watercolor West, the Rocky Mountain Watermedia Society, the Louisiana Watercolor Society; Signature Life Member, the International Society of Experimental Artists, Signature Life Member and the International Society of Acrylic Painters.
Mehaffey has won major awards in juried exhibitions including the Silver Medal of Honor (twice) and the Arches Paper Co Award from the American Watercolor Society, the Beverly Green Memorial Purchase Award from the National Watercolor Society, M. Grumbacher Gold Medal from Allied Artists of America, the Skyledge Award from TWSA, Biennial Award from the 2010 Shanghai Zhoujiajiao International Biennial Watercolor Exhibition, Best of Show from the San Diego Watercolor Society and guest artist for the Salon De L'Aquarelle 2015, Antwerp, Belgium. He is also the winner of the OAB's 2023 "Best in Show" Plein Air Artist.
