Class description from the instructor:

In this one-day workshop, we will paint in plein air outside of the Old Art Building. The gardens should have many blooms! I will start with a demo on how I decide what to paint and where to set up for a successful painting. It’s important for you to know where the light is coming from and how fast it’s moving. Is there a shadow that needs to be captured first? Color harmony is important to create strong and dynamic paintings. You will create an atmosphere and learn painting techniques that will set the stage for you to express yourself and your skills in portraying light. This class is is designed for painters with plein air experience.

  • Meet Lori Feldpausch

Living in the northern tip of Lake Huron on the Canadian border, Lori's summers were filled with nature and the quietness that the big body of water creates. With no phone or TV, her imagination was free to explore and grow. After having been downstate for 35 years, she still spends as much time in the summer right next door to where she grew up, renewing her spirit and giving the calmness that only the great lakes can do.

Her art has been a lifetime journey working with a New York artist and spending 14 years working on murals for large hotels such as The Plaza in New York (4 years 18 murals), Palm Beach Breakers hotel (Venetian ballroom), Greenbrier (restoration), and many others. She decided it was time to paint for her and so she started taking classes first with Sharon Griffs Tarr and then Scott Christensen, completing two workshops with him. She has also worked with Mary Whyte, Stuart Shils, C.W. Mundy, Diane Rath (mentor) Kevin Beifuss, David Slonim, and Daniel Gerhartz.

She is a firm believer in self-study. Having examined a long lineage of artists, she feels a sense of history when she paints, be it the color of green that Edgar Payne used on his water or the light that streams across a Sorrola painting. She has been in National shows such as Milificent Rogers Plein air show Taos Abend Gallery, Denver plein air show, Richard Schmid auction, American Impressionists Society and Oil painters of America. She has also participated in Paint Grand Traverse since its inception.
