Oil painting is often seen as daunting and inaccessible. These courses will demystify the art of oils and help you feel prepared to take on the paint used by master painters for centuries. Learn the basics of how to prepare a surface for oil painting, different techniques for laying out your compositions, and methods for applying the paint. You will also receive an introduction into how to use paint thinners and mediums to create underpaintings and build layers of color.

We will start each day looking at artist samples while talking about how to achieve different effects when painting. We will then work alongside one another to create a painting based on themes present in Good Harbor Bay. Day 1 will be exploring the form of White Pine Trees, and Day 2 will dive into painting waves. You can sign up for these courses as stand alone classes or come to both and receive a more thorough introduction.

Course takes place during Paul’s Emerging Artist exhibit, Of Winds and Waves and White Pines.

Instructor will provide class materials. Each participant will receive palettes, solvent, paint medium, and brushes. If interested in purchasing your own materials, the instructor can recommend quality beginner oil painting kits. Participants are welcome to bring their own supplies.
