About Debbie Orthner Lamson

Art has always given me great joy and has been a significant part of my life as long as I can remember. Early on, I realized that I look at things differently than many people do. As a mother of three and retired middle school art teacher, I decided to return to my life as an artist. I've traveled all over the U.S. and Europe painting the landscapes that inspire me. Experimenting in numerous art mediums has always fascinated me as I continually manipulate my paintings into conceptual images. My art isn't intended to be an visual reproduction of what I see, anyone can do that with a camera. My paintings are more of an inspirational response to this beautiful world.

I draw inspiration from nature, particularly Northern Michigan sunsets. I begin my paintings by; drawing, applying mediums, incorporating Venetian plaster, found or handmade papers, and acrylic paint creating lights and darks on canvas, wood panel or watercolor paper. The composition begins to reveal itself into an abstract landscape or abstract painting. I know I'm done when my eye moves across the painting absorbing the unity of the composition.
