We will study the process of asserting and obliterating, of marking and veiling. This process leads to a rich history of surface in a painting and a dense record on paper or canvas of the artist’s movements, intuitions and decision. Acrylic or oil paint would be preferable. All levels are welcome.

Class Description

A workshop for those with some prior experience in oil or acrylic who are serious about improving their work. Individual needs and abilities will be addressed to help you get a fresh vision of your work. David Grath, the LCCC's first Artist-in-Residence in 2006, encourages you to bring one finished painting and one work in progress for in-depth critique.  Working in plein aire or from still life, a third canvas will be painted from start to finish. Class may also include a visit to Grath's Leland studio.

Students will construct a willow fan chair using aspen and willow.  Day one will be held at the Old Art Building to construct the aspen frame and learn about collecting the materials and use of tools. Class Description

Bring a chair that is in good condition and requires a pre-woven seat or back, i.e. has a track in the wood around the seat. Seat must be removed and the track cleared before class. Bring utility or Exacto knife, scissors, rubber mallet, wood glue (Titebond I or Elmer’s), cloth rag, towel, and sandpaper-150 grit.  Cane webbing, wedges, and spline will be available in class for $12.00.

Class Description:

Come and learn how to paint with this most versatile of mediums! From watercolor to impasto, acrylic can do it all. The first half of class is devoted to experimenting with different thicknesses of paint moving from very watery to thick applications. We’ll be adding in watercolor pencils and oil pastel, and using different supports. You’ll have a hands-on lesson, experimenting and playing with many techniques. The last part of class is devoted to completing a small painting using some of the things you learned. I’ll bring all the supplies…you just bring your can-do!

In this two day intensive workshop, we’ll discuss the necessity of taking emotional risks in our own writing, and how to tackle the really big themes and experiences—whether as writers, or other kinds of creative thinkers and Makers. We’ll read and consider poems and texts in which the author writes with "something at stake". We’ll employ free-writing and other improvisations designed to encourage leaps of the imagination, unlikely associations, fresh imagery, and dazzling language. We’ll write together, experiment with a range of strategies for “getting started”, and come back on day two with new work to share with the group.

This session will be of use to poets, essayists, memoirists and fiction writers, but also welcomes artists from other disciplines, too, particularly those seeking to stimulate new thinking, inward awareness, and breakthroughs in the creative process.

Holly Wren Spaulding studied creative writing at Interlochen Arts Academy, University of Michigan, and Trinity College, Dublin. Her articles, essays and poems have appeared widely, most recently in The Nation, Michigan Quarterly Review, Witness, and Wake. She is the recipient of numerous honors, including five Avery Hopwood Awards, The CuChulainn to Kavanaugh Award for Poetry (Northern Ireland), N.M.E.A.C.’s Environmental Journalist of the Year Award, two Pushcart nominations, and a 'Best of the Web' nomination. She has been awarded writing residencies at Mesa Refuge, Blue Mountain Center, The Hill House, and is the current artist-in-residence at the Jean Nobel Parsons Center for Art & Science. Her collection of poems, The Grass Impossibly, won the 2008 Michigan Writers Cooperative Press Chapbook Award. She is Senior Editor of Dunes Review, serves on the board of Michigan Writers, Inc., and teaches writing at Northwestern Michigan College, as well as in monthly Poetry Boot Camps in Traverse City, MI.

A traditional Odawa basket maker will guide you in making a beautiful birch bark basket. The basket will have a base of 7” x 5.5” and will be approximately 6” tall. One large piece of birch bark will be bent using a hot plate and awls will be used to make holes to sew the sides with spruce tree root. Must have forearm and hand strength! Embellish with leather, cones and feathers. Class size is limited.

Class Description:

On a corner lot in Leland, Richard Allen is modeling and inspiring sustainability through growing food. In collaboration with the Leelanau Community Cultural Center and Leelanau County MSU Extension, these classes are being offered to help guide beginners as well as seasoned gardeners. All sessions will be flexible enough to answer questions and have time to observe what is going on in the garden. Explore the watercolor media and begin the journey of creativity through small studies. We will watch the power of color through a quick study of primary colors and blend them into beautiful secondary colors. The Leelanau Artists at the Old Art Building in Leland  will host their eleventh Annual Exhibition June 1-3.

This exhibition represents the work of a group of visual artists who meet weekly to paint at the Old Art Building.  Some work in oils while others use watercolors, pastels, acrylics and other media. The purpose of the group is to participate in the imaginative and challenging creative process and to enjoy the camaraderie and inspiration of fellow artists.

The opening reception is Friday, June 1 from 5 to 7:30 pm and is open to the public.  The exhibit will continue on Saturday, June 2 from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday, June 3 from 11 am to 5 pm.

Craig Holland, a native Detroiter, was raised among artist.  He studied at Wayne State University, and from the Society of Arts and Crafts, was selected to join a national advertising agency.  He started and independent graphic arts studio, and worked for many years a Creative Director in Automotive Marketing. Class Description:

This workshop is for painters who want to improve their work in oil or who are skilled in another medium but have always wanted to try oil painting. I’ll share my painting philosophy regarding composition, value and color and the qualities of painting in oil that I find so compelling. It is the medium of the masters but it is also the most forgiving for the beginner. I’ll do at least one demo painting from beginning to completion but at least 2/3 of the time will be devoted to personal instruction as you work on your painting. My journey as a painter began in the 1960’s.  I attended the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit and then traveled west to attend the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, California to pursue my dream of designing cars.  While I was in school, the first seeds of interest in painting were sown.  I took several painting classes in addition to all my design courses and really grew to love watercolor.  I graduated with a degree in industrial design in 1966 and returned to my home state of Michigan, where I began a 33-year career with Chrysler Corporation, designing cars (of all things!)

During the late 70s, Chrysler experienced some financial trouble and I was temporarily laid off.  During that time, I started painting again - mostly watercolors of scenes from areas around Michigan.  I was fortunate to be represented by several local galleries in Michigan and had three “one-man shows,” selling about 200 original paintings.

After retiring in 1999 from Chrysler, my wife and I began splitting our time between Suttons Bay, Michigan and Bonita Springs, Florida.  Retirement has given me the time to focus on my painting and I have enjoyed reaching my goal of learning to paint with oils.  In fact, since my retirement I have painted over 300 paintings and more than half of them have been in oil.

Every painting I do is a new challenge and I learn something from each one.  I try to do more than just record the world around me.  (a camera does a good job of that!)  My goal is to let people see what I see in a way that is fresh and new to them.  I try to capture the emotions of the scene in front of me, which I feel makes my work more “painterly” and less “rendered.”  This can be seen in strong strokes of paint and obvious brushwork.

There is always something new to be learned and applied to painting.  Travelling to Europe, China and the American Southwest has given me a broad range of subject matter from which to draw in my painting.  I have also studied with several outstanding painters which has only enhanced my overall technique.  One of the most significant influences on my painting has been painting on site, or what is called “plein Air” painting.

I have been fortunate in finding broad acceptance of my work, both in Florida and Michigan.   In the past 4 years I have entered 18 shows, winning awards in 17 of them. I am currently represented by Treeline Gallery, Painted Horse Gallery and The Center Gallery – all in Michigan - and Gallerie Unique in Florida.

Class Description:

Learn the process of watercolor painting in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. The main emphasis will be individual expression and development of each student's own painting style. Informational demonstrations, critiques and individual help will be used to increase the students understanding of the use of color and design. Photos, flowers, the beautiful outdoors, and still life objects will be  available or you can use your own reference materials for inspiration. Students are encouraged to collect examples of watercolors painted by their favorite artists and bring them to class for a discussion on the various styles of watercolor. While this class is designed for students with little or no experience, it would also be helpful to any artists wishing to review and brush up their skills.

Class Description:

Introducing gouache to all skill levels. Like watercolor, gouache is water based, has a wide range of transparency and allows easy transport and clean up. Going beyond watercolor, however, gouache offers greater body for layering, opacity and brilliance. This intensive 3 day course will draw upon architecture, topography and natural objects found in the landscape to explore new terrain in thinking and making on the page. Finding the balance between spontaneity and control, observation and experimentation, we will investigate the dynamic properties of abstraction, reference and memory.
The days are full with stimulating exercises, demonstrations, individual attention, and discussions on contemporary genres. This introduction to gouache is for all skill levels.

Class Description:

An intermediate level course for those who wish to learn traditional animation drawing. Class Description:

Drawing is a human tool that predates language. We can use drawing to explore what we see or know, or we can use it to discover something we imagine. This workshop is about how we can use drawing to create new imagined ideas and push those ideas forward into a body of work.

Using simple drawing materials and paper we will work with non- objective shapes, line, and forms to make a simple drawing and then quickly build upon that idea to make a second drawing and a third, producing 30-50 drawings in each of the 3 day sessions.  By the end of the work each participant will have produced a portfolio of 100-150 drawings.

The class will include discussion about art, being an artist, and historical examples of the genre of drawing and what drawing can do for artistic development.

Water media provide endless opportunities to create various textures and revisions depending on which media one uses.  This class will explore the ways in which to approach water color, acrylic, gouache, and casein in order to complete paintings filled with color.  A class for all painters interested in working with many media at a time.  Duncan brings a high keyed and supportive energy to his teaching and, according to his former students, creates an atmosphere where all painters feel successful. Come and enjoy an hour of painting at the Old Art Building after school from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Four consecutive Tuesday sessions will be offered on February 21, 28, March 6, 13.

Open to 3^rd, 4^th, 5^th and 6^th graders.

The cost is $10 per class payable to the Leelanau Community Cultural Center (LCCC)

Acrylic paint will be used. It is water based and offers transparency and an opaque quality, while allowing for layering of brilliant color during composition. The casual atmosphere will offer discussion, experimental exercises and the composing of full mini paintings. Students will investigate color observation of ordinary structures, and translate into forms and color. Big paint brushes and thick paint will be used.

• Feb. 21 – Paint thick on a mini woodblock. Subject: a still life

• Feb. 28 – Paint with tones on paper/illustration board.   Subject: a cup or a cylinder

• Mar. 6 – Paint & use masking tape to develop layers.  Subject: a shoe

•  Mar. 13 – Paint and collage to develop image.  Subject: a surprise.

2011 Artist in Residence Dewey Blocksma

  Dewey Blocksma, whose sculptures are hard to describe but are instantly recognizable, will be the Old Art Building’s sixth annual Ann Hall Artist in Residence for summer, 2011.

He has been called a folk artist and a creator of “outsider” art but however it is defined, Blocksma’s art is always provocative in sum, and amusing in its parts. His materials are household objects,  builder’s tools, children’s toys and pieces of Americana. Sally Viskochil, owner of Omena’s Tamarack Craftsmen Gallery which is home to many of Blocksma’s creations, puts it succinctly in a 2004 Traverse Magazine article: “Dewey does what he does…and the world either gets it or doesn’t get it.”

Blocksma spent several years of his childhood in Lahore, Pakistan, which set him on a non-traditional learning path before his family moved back to the United States and Grand Rapids, MI.  Following in his father’s footsteps, he became a doctor and traveled through Africa and Europe before returning to the U.S.  He began working as  an emergency room physician in small towns across lower Michigan.

To relieve the pressures of emergency room trauma, he began crafting toy-like figures from everyday objects until his part-time obsession overtook his professional life. He left the medical world in 1979 at age 36 to pursue life as a full-time artist and moved from the Grand Rapids area to northern Michigan.

Blocksma’s work drew considerable attention when he was commissioned by Traverse City to create a public sculpture. The result was the controversial “River Guardian” on the Cass Street bridge over the Boardman River, which brought equal amounts of praise and complaining.

The artist’s work will be exhibited at the Old Art Building June 24, 25, and 26, with an interactive presentation during the exhibit at a time to be announced later.  He will conduct two workshops in August to design and create an art piece.

Class Description: 

Take clay for a spin - on the wheel that is!  Students will learn throwing on the wheel.  How to center, open & pull the clay into a functional shape.  In this case a colorful place setting - a plate, bowl & cup.  Work primarily on the pottery wheel learning to throw pots, bowls, & cups with handles that will be fired & glazed.  They will also make a multimedia project that begins on the wheel & incorporates both natural & found objects. Class takes place at Leland School Art Room.

Frank Mead and the committee members plan to revise the seminar schedule and will also review the pricing schedule to encourage more participation in multiple seminars.   The Leelanau Summinars contributed $3000 to the LCCC for administrative costs, and $1000 each to the Leland Library and the Leland School for use of their facilities as venues.

We look forward to a reception planned for July 1, 2012 to introduce the speakers and topics for another series of seminars for social and intellectual discourse.

The 16th annual art fair will be held Saturday, July 14, 2012 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. It features 80 art booths on the lawn and inside the building, featuring fine art paintings,photography, pottery, tiles, hand-blown glass, jewelry, woodcarving, basketry, fiber, folk art, sculpture, quality artisan wares, and gourmet food items.

 Fiber Festival 2011

The featured artist this year is Ann Loveless of Quilts by Ann inFrankfort,Michigan.  Ann is a quilt artist that captures the beauty of northernMichiganin her art quilts.  Ann has a clothing and textile degree with an emphasis in art fromMichiganStateUniversity.  She has had a love of sewing and fabric all her life and since 2005 has found her calling in art quilts.  The subject matter in her quilts include birch trees, flowers, ferns, sunsets, sparkling water and many other favorite nature scenes.  Her fine sense of color punctuates her designs along with using batik fabrics, yarns, tulle, angelina fiber and lots of thread for texture and depth.

Ann’s art quilt “Trillium” is currently on display at the Gerald Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids as a submission for Art Prize. In the last five years Ann had 17 of her quilts accepted in national juried quilt shows around the country.  Her art quilts can be seen at State of the Art Framing & Gallery in Beulah, Gallery Fifty in Traverse City, and Ward & Eis Gallery in Petoskey and on her website at www.quiltsbyann.com

Class Description: 

Welcome to Agrabah, City of Enchantment, where every beggar has a story and every camel has a tail.  All of your favorite characters are here in this stage adaptation of the Disney hit film. Filled with magic, mayhem, and flying carpet rides, "Disney’s Aladdin, Jr.” features an award-winning score with songs including “A Whole New World” and “Friend Like Me”. This two week intensive workshop will feature instruction in musical theatre with classes in acting, singing, dancing & other technical aspects of theatre.  Auditions are required to assign roles in the production & will take place on the first class day.  All registrants will perform in the play.  Classes will take place at the Leland School Performing Arts Center.  Bring a sack lunch each day. The performance will be presented on stage Friday, August 3 at 3:00 & 5:00 pm. Directed by Mychelle Hopkins and the Traverse City Children’s Theater staff.

Graduating from Minnesota State University with his BFA in Studio Art, he set off for Cape Cod to immerse himself in a community of artisits.  After his first taste of apinting and exhibiting on the East Coast, he settled in the Grand Traverse Bay area of northern Michigan where he again found himself in a large community of artists.  For several years, Murphy exhibited in art fairs around the state, garnering award and a large audience of collectors.  With additional assistance from galleries and dealers who represented him, his work found its way into many large corporate collections such as Kraft, General Motors, Prudential, Mead Corporation, International Harvestor, Us Gypsum and Joh Hancock.

While his career as a painter took form he supplemented his income through another of his interests, woodworking.  Murphy spent a number of years designing furniture and cabinet making for shops in the Grand Traverse region.  Seeking greater fulfillment from his painting, he set the woodworking aside and began teaching painting classes and workships at regional art centers.  Expanding on this experience he has undertaken more travel for his own painting as well as the opportunity to teach in a variety of environments.  These pursuits have taken him around the US , France, Spain, Italy, Nova Scotia, Hawaii and the Caribbean.

A couple of excursions into illustration have resulted in two books. The first book, the award-winning "Reach for the Moon" was a collaboration with a young learning disabled writer.  The second bood, a children's book titled "Smokey the Raccoon", published by PF Publishing.  In 2002 Charles was flatter to have his work selected for publication in Artists' Magazine's 2002 limited edition calendar.  The calendar features 13 artists juried from a field of 13,000.

Charles Murphy curently teaches painting programs at the Grand Traverse Art Center in Traverse City, Michigan.  His works are in the 143rd Annual International Traveling Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society.

June 11-13, 2010-Reception and Exhibit

Meet the artists and view a mixed media presentation of a lifetime collection of original artwork in oils and watercolor.  Join us for the opening reception on Friday, June 11 from 5 to 8 pm.  The exhibit continues Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday 12 to 4 pm. 

June 24 & August 9-Intensive All Day Workshops

This workshop is designed to engage the student watercolorist in a wide variety of watercolor applications.  Woven into these exercises will be sound principles of “picture making” including formats, value pattern schemes and organized color palette use.  Class size limited, registration required.  10 am – 4 pm. $25

July 12-Lecture and Demonstration

Charles will give a presentation on the history and development of the watercolor medium.  The paint and its behavioral properties will be clearly laid out.  Paired with this discussion will be active demonstrations to illustrate the examples.  1 – 4 pm.  $10

A Christmas arts & crafts show will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Old Art Building in Leland.

This year's show features 20 local artisans with fresh and dried holiday wreaths, herbal soaps and lotions, jewelry, specialty foods, pottery, woven wheat, cards, pillows, clothing for children, and many hand knit items.

Melanie Parke has a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago, with a National Leadership Award. She is the recipient of several professional residencies, including Yosemite and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Parks. Her paintings are exhibited nationally.

In 1982, Bob and his wife Suzanne moved to Suttons Bay. In the ensuing years his career has evolved to include architectural ironwork, furniture design, and sculpture. It has also increasingly included interaction with art departments and their students in public and private schools throughout the Grand Traverse Region. Current sculptural work can be seen at the entrance to Center Point and the wall sconces inside the State Theatre in Traverse City.

The workshops will be an experience in designing and making three-dimensional objects. The June workshops will include conceiving the pieces and making the maquette (model) from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm each Saturday.

The July workshops will be held at the Purvis studio at 3447 Peshawbestown Road, to execute the designs into a 3-D piece from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm each day. Class size is limited to ten people. You must register for this workshop. Materials fee only.

Petroskey was born near the small village of Lake Leelanau. Fred graduated from Western Michigan University in 1962, having majored in Art and Political Science and began the Art Program at Delton-Kellogg Schools near Kalamazoo, MI before moving to Boston, MA in 1967.

During the next seventeen years Fred taught at the DeCordova Museum of Art, judged art shows and lectured. In 1984, Fred returned to Leelanau County, taught at Northwestern Michigan College and restored a 19th century farmhouse which became his studio and where he continues to receive portrait commissions from around the country.

An opening reception was held Friday, June 1, 2007, giving the opportunity to meet Fred Petroskey and to view a selection of his paintings and a slide presentation of his drawings and paintings.

During the summer three workshops were held to include personal instruction on students’ ongoing work. Participants were asked to bring current projects and painting materials. the workshops and their subjects were:

Monday, July 2 – Composition: Placement, size, and color application
Thursday, July 19 – Beginning a Portrait: Demonstration on the process of creating a pastel portrait

During this presentation, Fred Petroskey created an oil painting as he discussed technique, materials, and composition.

Grath says that in his oil paintings he seeks to show the mystery inherent in the interplay of the light, the shadow, and the depth of his vision. Likening the light in our area to that of southern France or Italy, Grath states, "Because the peninsula runs north-south, the light and the way it reflects and refracts off the trees and the water and the land is unique."

The new Artist-in-Residence was introduced to the public at a reception and art show for the Tuesday painting group known as the Leelanau Artists at the Old Art Building. At that time it was announced that he would conduct four workshops designed to give attendees the opportunity to work and paint with the artist. These workshops were held June 22, July 9, July 20, and August 16.

A lecture was held August 4, amid a large selection of Grath’s artwork which had been set up for the annual David Grath Fine Art Exhibit. At this time the artist focused on the special qualities of painting in Leelanau County, including his own personal history of painting.
