For years the LCCC board discussed having an artist’s artwork on the Art Leelanau poster, but the process of selection never offered itself. Then in 2013, after first ever “Leland Air” Plein Air event, the selection process was obvious. The “Best in Show” for Leland Air will become the artwork for the Art Leelanau poster and limited edition giclee prints. In 2014 Angela Saxon’s painting 1st and Pine, painted on May 24th 2014, won that honor. Fifty giclee prints, signed and numbered by the artist were made available at Art Leelanau and sold for $50. “Leland Air” is now an annual event during the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. Artists from all across Michigan and beyond spend the day painting in and around Leland. Then that evening the public is invited to view and purchase artwork “fresh off the easel” and the “Best in Show” is chosen. So never give up on a good idea. It may take a while to develop, but give it time and it might JUST HAPPEN!
