Join us for chocolates and a special concert on Valentine’s Day – Saturday, February 14, 2009

Breathe Owl Breathe sounds as intimately familiar with woods and wild as their band name suggests, but there is an air of cosmopolitan sophistication, too. Micah Middaugh, Andréa Moreno-Beals, and Trevor Hobbs weave songs that are simultaneously playful and thoughtful, simple and intricate. Their layering of guitar, cello, banjo, drum set and harmonizing vocals, as well as some unusual musical uses of instruments and other found objects, results in a very creative and original sound.

8:00 pm.

Tickets $12 Adults/ $5 Students available at Leelanau Books in Leland and Brilliant Books in Suttons Bay.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of Fine Arts group at Suttons Bay Schools and all proceeds go directly to fine art programs in the schools.

Opening Reception: Friday, August 22 – 5:00-9:00 pm

Saturday, August 23 – 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Sunday, August 24 – 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

This exhibit celebrates the beautiful landscapes of Leelanau County and the 20th Anniversary of the Leelanau Conservancy, with 15 new large format landscape photographs from 11 beloved preserves, including DeYoung, Houdek Dunes, Whaleback, Chippewa Run, Teichner, Hall Beach, Crystal River, Lighthouse West, Belanger Creek, and Cedar River, in addition to new work from Sleeping Bear Dunes. A portion of the sales of limited edition photographs of Conservancy properties will be donated to the Leelanau Conservancy.

Call 231-326-2047 or 239-398-3375 for more information.

About the Work
Jeff’s photographs are made with a 4x5 wooden field camera and color transparency film. During the exposure, which may last from several seconds to as long as a minute, he brings together the dynamic elements of a powerful composition, shifting light, varied textures, the sometimes unpredictable effects of long film exposures, and the inherent spirit in the landscape that inspired him to make the photograph in the first place. The photographs are limited to editions of 250.

Jeff’s paintings are influenced by the Impressionists, Luminists, and the work of 19th Century Florida painters. As a new painter he is trying to pull from all of those influences to achieve a distinctive style filled with color, light, and textures, with a focus on the landscapes of Leelanau County and the Everglades in Florida. He works primarily in oils and alkyds in plein air, but also in the studio from plein air studies and photographs.

An exhibit of Batiks and Oil Paintings of Northern Michigan. Terri and Kindra Haugen, mother and daughter, will exhibit new works of art at the Leland Old Art Building July 18-19, 2008.

Opening Reception: Friday, July 18 – 7:00 - 9:00 pm

Exhibit Saturday, July 19 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

Terri Haugen was 9 years old spending summers in Leland while her mother managed Joyce of Leland during the summer. She started selling watercolors around age 10 and became a full time artist by 19. Terri is best known for her fine art batiks of northern Michigan living. She is considered one of the Benzie’s jewels along with Gwen Frostic, deriving her Inspiration from the beautiful area. She is self-taught, starting her career in Traverse City. Terri went on to adorn the covers of national magazines and several T.V. shows along with exhibiting in Japan and Europe. She is considered one of America’s foremost batik artists and named a master of batik by the Japanese government. She has won many awards for her batik, mixed media paintings and art quilts.

Kindra Haugen, Terri’s youngest daughter grew up in her mother’s studio. She began painting and drawing as soon as she held a pencil. Having all kinds of art supplies available she kept herself busy while Mom worked, creating many paintings, including the walls and floors, not always appreciated by her mother. At age 5 she started selling her painted rocks, She was featured on HGTV’s Carol Duvall show. She quit painting rocks at the end of that summer when asked to do a commission – being a true artist at age 5 she told her patron, “I only paint what I want to paint, and I don’t want to paint that.”

Kindra went to several of the local art fairs with Mom where her paintings would sell out. She won a scholarship to Interlochen Academy of the Arts. She is now in her 2nd year at the prestigious Ringling College of Art and Design. An Illustration major, she plans on a career as a concept and fine-art artist, creating characters for the movies, writing books complete with her illustrations. Kindra is very passionate about northern Michigan’s coastline and spends the summers painting plein-air and in the studio

Terri’s gallery is located in downtown Frankfort at 338 Main St.

Arguably the most difficult subject to paint is the human figure, no matter what medium you use. In this workshop you will learn how to approach this subject by understanding what colors to use for the flesh tones, including various shadow colors. Understanding the various “planes” and shapes are vital to good figure paintings and ultimately successful portrait work. You will be shown some of the subtle nuances of the face and whether to use hard or soft edge shading. We will paint male, female, and a child; some will be heads only and others full figure. Visit www.passarelli-art.com to view current paintings. Supply list upon registration.

Charles Passarelli, BFA, spent most of his career in Michigan as a commercial illustrator and taught at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. He currently teaches watercolor in Delray Beach, Florida.

The opening reception takes place from 5-8 PM on Friday and will feature a selection of original sculpture and furniture and a digital presentation of a collection of his artwork. Refreshments will be served on Friday, and the exhibit continues Saturday 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday 12 to 4 pm.

During his residence time, Bob will offer a series of four workshops in designing and making three dimensional objects. Workshops on June 21 and 28 will include conceiving the pieces and making the maquette (model) from 10 am to 1 pm each Saturday at a Fishtown studio in Leland. The July 12 and 19 workshops will be held at the Purvis studio in Suttons Bay to execute the designs into a 3D piece from 10 am to 5 pm each day. Class size is limited, so you must register (Materials fee $25).

About Bob

A native of Traverse City, Michigan, Robert Purvis graduated from TC Central in 1965 and Northwestern Michigan College in 1968. He worked in his family’s steel fabrication business until 1976 when, after the business was sold, he struck off on his own. After a couple of years of repair work, he was asked to be more creative at the behest of clients interested in unconventional work. From that experience to present, he has tried to use his creativity to the fullest extent possible. In 1982, he and his wife, Suzanne moved to Suttons Bay. In the ensuing years his career has evolved to include architectural ironwork, furniture design and sculpture. It has also increasingly included interaction with art departments and their students in public and private schools throughout the Grand Traverse Region. Current sculptural work can be seen at the entrance to Center Point and the wall sconces inside the State Theater in Traverse City.

Like watercolor, gouache is water-based, has a wide range of transparency, and allows easy transport and clean-up. Unlike watercolor, however, it offers greater body for layering, opacity, and brilliance. This intensive course will draw upon lush showy blooms and flowery bouquets, in and out of the studio, starting with quick drawings in the morning and developing individual projects in gouache as the day progresses. This class will stress observation and investigation – searching form, line, shape, and color in loose, expressive, and fresh ways. Come prepared to experiment with design and abstraction. The days are full with stimulating exercises, demonstrations, individual attention, and exposure to traditional and contemporary genres.

Each day we will start with discussing what makes the landscape in front of us unique and how an artist best captures the feeling of each place. With sketch books we will spend time doing small drawings which help solidify ideas and teach us to look closer at what we are seeing. The rest of the time will be spent working up as many small paintings as time allows. Discussion about art and being an artist and historical references will be stressed. The first day of the class we will meet at the Old Art Building and will be painting in Leland. Materials and work can be stored at the Old Art Building overnight for the duration of the class.

Richard Kooyman has a BFA from Grand Valley State University and an MFA from Ohio State. He has won numerous awards and has exhibited locally and nationally for 20 years.

What makes a painting? Technique, ability, practice, paint and other materials, and the primary ingredient – YOU the painter. In this two-day workshop you will explore and develop abstract imagery with new approaches as each day you are guided in freeing exercises with collage, printing, and layering them. You’ll paint without brushes. This award-winning artist and teacher will use examples of world-recognized artists and of her own work to encourage you to open yourself to the possibilities within you. Painting on a variety of surfaces and with both watercolor and acrylic, each participant can expect to work on several pieces, bringing at least two to near-completion. Individual instruction and criticism along with group discussion will occur. Come prepared to have fun, to learn more about water media and to recognize YOU as a painter and artist. Whether you are a beginner or advanced painter, a realist, a landscape artist or a non-objective artist you will have fun and learn things that can be translated anywhere.

What makes a fairy tale a fractured fairy tale? Once upon a time fairy tales got twisted, tangled, and everyone lived happily ever after – or not. This will be a fun and engaging workshop that will take traditional fairy tales and turn them into fractured tales! Traditional fairy tales share many common elements or themes. Fractured tales, on the other hand, alter characters or setting, add modern language or events, or change outcomes. Students will share favorite traditional fairy tales, and, as a group, will “alter” the tale to make it a fractured tale! The sky is the limit with what the outcome will be, because a child’s imagination is endless! For ages 7-10.
