Terri Haugen was 9 years old spending summers in Leland while her mother managed Joyce of Leland during the summer. She started selling watercolors around age 10 and became a full time artist by 19. Terri is best known for her fine art batiks of northern Michigan living. She is considered one of the Benzie’s jewels along with Gwen Frostic, deriving her Inspiration from the beautiful area. She is self-taught, starting her career in Traverse City. Terri went on to adorn the covers of national magazines and several T.V. shows along with exhibiting in Japan and Europe. She is considered one of America’s foremost batik artists and named a master of batik by the Japanese government. She has won many awards for her batik, mixed media paintings and art quilts.

Kindra Haugen, Terri’s youngest daughter grew up in her mother’s studio. She began painting and drawing as soon as she held a pencil. Having all kinds of art supplies available she kept herself busy while Mom worked, creating many paintings, including the walls and floors, not always appreciated by her mother. At age 5 she started selling her painted rocks, She was featured on HGTV’s Carol Duvall show. She quit painting rocks at the end of that summer when asked to do a commission – being a true artist at age 5 she told her patron, “I only paint what I want to paint, and I don’t want to paint that.”

Kindra went to several of the local art fairs with Mom where her paintings would sell out. She won a scholarship to Interlochen Academy of the Arts. She is now in her 2nd year at the prestigious Ringling College of Art and Design. An Illustration major, she plans on a career as a concept and fine-art artist, creating characters for the movies, writing books complete with her illustrations. Kindra is very passionate about northern Michigan’s coastline and spends the summers painting plein-air and in the studio

Terri’s gallery is located in downtown Frankfort at 338 Main St.
