The Leelanau Community Cultural Center is sponsoring its thirteenth annual Fiber Festival on Friday, October 11 from 5 to 8 pm and Saturday, October 12from 10 am to 5 pm at the Old Art Building in Leland. Artists with original fiber art will exhibit and sell their work in mediums of wearable art, textiles, weaving, art quilts, fiber sculpture, knits and yarns. Admission is free.
The featured artist this year is Sarah Bearup-Neal whose quilt making practice began in 2003. She approaches the quilt as an art form: working from original ideas, in a non-representational, contemporary style. Her work does reference some aspects of traditional piecework. There are echos of it in some of the materials used (e.g. recycled men’s shirts); and the old, familiar quilt blocks, strip-pieced quilts and squares. The quilt is deeply associated with the home and pure function.
Fiber Festival exhibitors are Judy Balas, recycled and embellished clothing; Char Bickel, painted silk collage; Diane Bloomer, handspun yarn and dyed roving; Linda Broughton, recycled clothing; Yana Dee, natural fiber clothing, Keira Duvernoy, felted and linen hats; Doris Guffey, silk cashawls; Tracie Herkner, hand spun dyed yarns, Cynthia Hilliard, knits, gourds, and yarn; Jan Hinds, painted paper, woven vessels; Linda Kustra, specialty knits, Krystal Ann Miller, tapestry bags; Nancy Monteith, fiber jewelry; Carol Salerno, hand woven articles; Christie Trout, pine needle baskets.
